Community & academic historians will speak on historical events that changed the course of Mexican American history, emphasizing the contribution of the Mexican American barrios, colonias and campos to understanding the greater context of California regional history.

UPCOMING EVENTS - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

*Gustavo Arellano Book signing of "Orange County: A Personal History," Thurs., Sept. 18, Yost Theater, Santa Ana- OCMAHS will have a display table. 
-We need volunteers to man the table, sell calendars and answer questions starting at 5:00 pm. The reading starts at 7:00 pm but we need assistance setting up.

*OCMAHS General Meeting, Sat., October 11, 10:00 AM- noon, Hispanic Heritage Month, Anaheim Public Library, 500 W. Broadway, Anaheim. 

-Local history author Marcelino Saucedo will discuss his new book, "Dream Makers and Dream Catchers: The Story of the Mexican Heritage on Catalina Island."  A book signing and reception will follow immediately after the presentation. We need help with set up and clean up, calendar sales, sign-in and membership.

*Noche de Altares - Saturday, November  1, 10:00 AM-10:00 PM, In front of the Yost Theater, Santa Ana.

-We need help setting up an altar for this Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos event, photo display, manning the booth, calendar sales and clean up.  We need volunteers for  two hour shifts.

Please contact us if you will be attending the volunteer session or are willing to give us a hand at any of these events.

Local historian and previous Logan Barrio resident Mary Garcia will discuss the book entitled Santa Ana's Logan Barrio: Its History, Stories and Families. The book published by the Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society will be for sale. A book signing will follow the lecture.

This event is co-sponsored by the SolArt collective. GRACIAS! This wonderful community space is run by a great group of powerful mujeres. They are dedicated to grassroots community efforts to improve Santa Ana for all residents through art, politics, music and community events.

Mendez v. Westminster

Chapman University will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the 1947 Mendez v. Westminster case that desegregated California's schools with a full morning of events. The events will be highlighted by the official unveiling of the U.S. Postal Service's new "Mendez v. Westminster: Toward Equality in Our Schools" commemorative postal stamp.

Other events that morning will include panel discussions by members of the plaintiff families in the case and other special guests, a screening of producer Sandra Robbie's Emmy-winning film on the Mendez case "For All the Children/Para Todos Los Ninos," a map-guided Civil Rights Tour through Orange, performances of the play "The 'Mexican O.C.'" by Breath of Fire Theater Company, and more. Robbie's MvW Magical History Tour bus will also be on hand, offering exhibits that will make the historic civil-rights case come to life.

The Mendez v. Westminster 60th Anniversary event is coordinated by Dr. Anaida Colon-Muniz, Associate Professor of Education. Admission is free and open to the public. Gustavo Arellano, writer for the OC Weekly, will discuss the 1936 Citrus Strike in which Mexican fruit pickers and packers challenged the powerful Orange County growers. This story of struggle for a decent living wage and working conditions and the violent racist backlash is local history that every resident of the community should be aware of.
